"The Addams Family is a fun show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it does revel in the creepy entertainment that has found popularity in the autumn season. The company at the Ziegfeld has found the balance between the obvious talent from the acting to the music, with the humor and lightheartedness this ghoulish tale needs.  Having seen other productions of this show, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this particular rendition, which is a testament to the creative process that can lead to a fantastic production when all the team is on board with their best efforts."

I had a very fun evening at the Ziegfeld Theater in Ogden. The Ziegfeld is continually putting up good polished and entertaining shows. Their level of talent always impresses me greatly. The Full Monty is no exception and I am very glad to have seen this show. I laughed a lot and I generally just had a great time. The characters are lovable, the actors portrayed them charmingly, and I felt very good leaving the theater. Stripping is often something you see portrayed as sad or dark, and in certain stereotypes. But in The Full Monty, it’s a strong choice and it’s done with fervent reason and everyone involved is getting something out of it. It’s about body acceptance, and acceptance in general. It truly is something that makes for a feel-good show.

My main summary of the experience of this classic title told via the Ziegfeld Theater is that the entire actor core put it all out there. Some were very strong vocally, and/or in dancing skill and/or acting talent; but all of them gave it 100%. This level of dedication turns an “ok” scene into a great scene, and a great scene into something magical. The live band was loud, in a good way, and seemingly flawless in their execution of the very recognizable 80s tracks...

The Ziegfeld Theater’s third annual holiday musical A Fairly Potter Christmas Carol is not your typical parody (of the internationally beloved Harry Potter series, if that isn’t obvious). Yes, it has silly jokes only true “Potterheads” will get. Yes, it has some campy original songs and bits borrowed from Broadway shows. It also has a lot of heart (three sizes too big, you might say) and an abundance of originality. Written by Rick Rea, the show combines holiday tropes like A Christmas Carol and How the Grinch Stole Christmas with the mania of Harry Potter. The original songs are not only funny, but catchy and heartwarming. Some parodies are hit and miss with the comedy, but this show is consistently funny or touching throughout.

Ogden’s Ziegfeld Theater opened their newest production, Guys and Dolls, to a nearly packed house last night. Strains of Sinatra and Louis Armstrong wafted through the air pre-show, creating anticipation in the crowd. The lush, satin curtain hiding the stage from the audience was a throwback to ‘40s and ‘50s movie palaces, so when it slowly rose the crowd was ready to step back to a time when ‘the war’ was over, hats in public were necessary, and Broadway was the haunt of gamblers and women of questionable virtue.

Guys and Dolls at the Ziegfeld Theatre in Ogden is a fun collection of quirky characters, energetic choreography, and charming musical numbers. My daughter and I had a fun night out in Ogden at The Ziegfeld Theatre.  From the moment we walked through the doors we were met with the delicious smell of popcorn at the concessions and the friendly faces of the staff. We sat down in the comfy seats and were awed by the elegant grand drape that hung at the front of the stage. The well-placed lighting made for a beautiful picture.

Ziegfeld Theater is what all theaters should strive to be like.  Warm, inviting and a cast and crew that doesn’t settle for anything less than perfection.  I took my daughters, Hunter (9) and Scout (4), to see Ziegfeld’s production of Annie.  The children in this production wowed from the opening number to the closing scene.  Each little orphan met her mark, made the crowd laugh and served up a performance worthy of any big stage.

Overall, this production represents a strong program for families to enjoy. I remember reading that the significance of shows like Annie lies in the fact that entire generations can enjoy the program together, and it seems that the Ziegfeld has taken that to heart.

The cast is small, only six characters, but each actor played their character so well I felt like I was watching the Peanuts gang on television…only a bit better...

So the cast, director and designers seem totally at home in the world of a hungry, talking plant with soulful singing; a leather-clad, sadistic dentist who hurts loved ones and patients alike; and a trio of backup singers interpreting the action like a Greek chorus transported to the 1950s or so, and gifted with strong singing voices, flashy/trashy outfits and solid senses of humor.

What ensues is a blend of crass piety so delicious it rivals even the lethal concoctions of Sister Julia, which is to say it’s to die for. The interplay between the five central nuns is biting in its comedy. Each character has a well-defined personality, ensuring that none of them fall into stereotype and everyone has something to offer. Though it would be sinful to suggest anything other than that Melissa Burke, as Sister Mary Amnesia, stole the show....

Ziegfeld’s Nunsense is a quirky, uplifting, and funny musical that the entire family can enjoy. I recommend it to any patrons looking for a frolicking night out, but I do give the warning that the show’s songs are extremely catchy, and have in fact been playing through my head all weekend. Which really isn’t such a bad thing, as I’ve got to relive the evening with hilarious tunes such as “We’ve Got to Clean Out the Freezer.” Who knew a bunch of nuns could be the source of so much entertainment...

The atmosphere of The Ziegfeld Theater’s production was electric and infectious from the moment you walk through the doors. The players walked the establishment in costume, interacting in character. The show opened with interaction from the stage, bringing the audience into the show in a tangible way, placing the fourth wall somewhere at the back of the auditorium. This show lends itself perfectly toward this type of audience interaction...

OGDEN — Local audiences won’t have to go far to get their rock ‘n’ roll concert this summer as the Ziegfeld Theater presents the Utah premiere of the Broadway hit “Rock of Ages,” opening June 3.

The Tony-nominated Broadway musical-turned film features classic 1980s’ hits from bands including Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi and Whitesnake, all with a live rock band. There are 22 different artists featured in the production.

Stage violence erupted on a South Ogden theater stage on June 5, leaving three characters dead and a large audience visibly shaken.

There’s something that feels eerily real about the Ziegfeld Theater’s production of “West Side Story.” The gang dance seems more angular and angry. The set, made in part of towering, scaffolding-type platforms on wheels, seems more dangerous.

I commend the Ziegfeld for tackling large and difficult pieces of art and not condensing or minimizing the difficulty and suffering. As much as I love the large scale productions of Broadway or touring companies, it makes me very happy to see a small community based company take an old run down building and work each show to make it a thing of beauty, family, and connection.

The Ziegfeld Theater’s strength, beyond the consistently creative choices made by actors, directors and designers, is the intimacy of its space.

In the case of “Les Miserables,” perhaps the Zig’s most ambitious project to date, the small theater seemed to strain to contain the amount of talent and lush music involved.

The Ziegfeld Theater opened its new season with “Fiddler on the Roof,” a show about tradition, and with some words about the traditions the theater has built since its 2012 opening.
